OPC .NET 3.0 (Xi) Interface Support

Starting with the release of Version 5.4, TOP Server supports the OPC .NET 3.0 (Xi) Interface for connecting to OPC DA and A&E type data.   The OPC .NET 3.0 (Xi) interface allows OPC .NET 3.0 (Xi) clients to connect to TOP Server via WCF and OPC .NET 3.0 (Xi) and access data from any TOP Server driver or from the TOP Server Alarm & Events Plug In or any other OPC UA or DA Server with the OPC Client Driver Suite option.

What is OPC .NET 3.0 (Xi)?

The OPC .NET 3.0 (Xi) Interface is the product of collaboration among several OPC foundation member vendor companies from the process industry to develop an easily integrated secure solution for communications to process industry systems, thought it can be used for any industry.  OPC .NET 3.0 (Xi) uses .NET technologies and the Windows Communications Framework (WCF) for implementation of its interfaces.

Key features of OPC .NET 3.0 (Xi):

  • Security – secure communications including access through firewalls
  • Robustness - reliable communications with error recovery
  • Plug-and-Play - automatic discovery of servers and their communications capabilities
  • Backward compatibility -  accessing existing OPC servers using a single .NET interface.
  • Protocol transparency – efficient client/server communications when both the client and server are on the same platform or within the same LAN and when the client is located on external networks including the Internet (see Figure on left)
